Ma'aden Phosphate Company JV (with Mosaic & SABIC)
Leveraging the vast phosphate rock deposits located in the north of the Kingdom, Ma'aden has executed a strategic joint venture that has successfully positioned Saudi Arabia as a global leader in the production of phosphate fertilizers, a critical component of global food security. The Kingdom is home to an estimated 7% of the world's phosphate reserves, and this venture was designed to monetize that significant natural endowment on a world scale.
The partnership, announced in 2013, brought together three industrial heavyweights in a joint venture to develop a fully integrated, world-class phosphate production facility with an estimated cost of SR 26 billion (approximately $7 billion). The ownership structure was strategically designed to combine complementary strengths:
- **Ma'aden (60%)**: The majority partner, providing access to the raw material reserves, significant capital investment, and in-Kingdom operational leadership.
- **The Mosaic Company (25%)**: A leading U.S.-based corporation and the world's largest producer of concentrated phosphate and potash crop nutrients.
- **SABIC (15%)**: The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, a global leader in diversified chemicals, contributed its extensive experience in executing mega-projects in the Kingdom and its own powerful global marketing capabilities.
